I took this reference photo in Zion National Park in Utah. The title “off The Rock” is a reference to an argument that, because our environmental situation is beyond repair from human-caused climate change, humans should invest all resources in transporting humanity to Mars and “off The Rock.” In contrast to the pessimistic title, the depth of water and bright colors evoke feelings of curiosity and excitement for life. The only red in the image is on the boy which creates a strong point of emphasis on the boy and his fearlessness to move into and explore the river. This contrast between the title and image reflects my mindset because I am hopeful for my personal future but am hopeless for the future of humanity. Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, Gold Key
