In Memoriam – Patrick Turner

pturner3Patrick Turner

1953-2008
Mixed Media Artist & Musician
Milwaukee, Wisconsin

It is with great sadness that this year’s Powderhorn Art Fair will not have the bright presence and consciousness raising art of Patrick Turner.

Patrick exhibited his work and won awards for many years at the Powderhorn Art Fair. He will be greatly missed, along with his creativity, wry jokes and open personality. To see a wonderful video tribute to him visit the website of The Art Guild in Milwaukee www.theeartguild.com

As we approach this holiday season, I was remembering Patrick Turner and how much he is missed. He must be looking down at us with His heavenly Father smiling down at us as we strive to make it thru this life on earth. He brought many of us artists great joy with his kind spirit and I know his daughter is missing her Daddy. I feel I know Patrick a little more through his beautiful daughter Jamila. I wanted just to take a moment and remember Patrick.

I walked around the art festival in Houston Texas, looking at all the talented professionals .They came from all over the country, and some were born in other parts of the world. One Sunday afternoon I saw Patrick Turner’s booth! I will tell that the images I saw that day were
so rich and gutsy and I was so proud to be there . I met Patrick and we
talked and he had that great humanity about him that matched his art.I have been friends with him for a few years and we would talk over the phone about art and life. I just learned today that Patrick passed away.
I hope he knew how he touched so many of us with his kind soul, and
his wonderful collages.Love,Peace ,and Joy to his family.

I met Patrick years ago on the art fair circuit and we had this immediate rapport. There was no “getting to know you” with Patrick; he was the real deal from the first handshake. I will forever cherish memories of partying at Shaw, of long rambles at Bayou City and , always, the mutual delight of finding one another at some art fair. His heart-tugging, thought-provoking work will forever be a part of me.

I met Patrick many years ago at a party given by Tom Feyrer. Patrick was unassuming and modest about his talent. I would see him from time to time at various art venues. I am shocked by his death – He was truly a talented artist and a very “real” person. He will be missed and his art will be treasured.

a fitting tribute to one of my best friends, If he was here he would be so shy about this tribute! He was and always will be the real deal!!! I always told patrick to enter the “Uptown” show, but he loved Powderhorn, and would never consider it.

Thank you, to the staff and volunteers of the Powderhorn Art Fair, for paying homage to a very skilled and creatively blessed human being in the spirit of Patrick Turner. We first met over thirty years ago, becoming friends and artistic colleagues, both of us living our art experience.
There will never be another like him.

Very sad news! I always looked forward to visiting his tent, exchanging a knowing glance of the world and some interesting philosophy. Fellow musician and a wonderful artist. I m proud to be the caretaker of “Hot Steps on a Lost Trail” from 2001. I shall keep it well.

I am from Milwaukee but lived in Minneapolis in the Powderhorn neighborhood for many years. I love Patrick’s work and the energy and perfection in which grounded it. I have known Patrick very a long time. I have many pieces by Patrick. His work is a moving dance, it is part of our living history, our living lives and quite grounded in the essence of who we are… I always looked forward to the Powderhorn Art Festival because that is where I would always see my homeboy! I knew I was in for some great art, great conversation and just a sho-nuff great time! My son and I would laugh all day and would be loving his energy. Patrick, we are so going to miss you, but we know, you will always be there!

I met Patrick while working at the Powderhorn Art Fair. I always looked forward to seeing him. I would be riding around on a golf cart checking on the artists and he would always flag me down for a chat. We talked about art, music and Milwaukee. I was deeply saddened to hear of his passing. He was a fantastic artist full of creativity and humor. We will all miss Patrick at the Powderhorn Art Fair and know he will be there with us in spirit.

I met Patrick 8 years ago at Bayou City in Houston. He was by far one of the most amazing spirits to ever have walked the earth. He was so full of energy and awe and inspiration and love and laughter. And did we ever laugh!

One year we were next door neighbors at a show and for three days straight we did nothing but slap our thighs giggling at stupid jokes. And yet he was such a serious artist, so unique and so smart about the business of art; the business of life. I listened to him. I learned from him.

My heart goes out to Patrick’s family. The world has lost a one in a million artist and a most compassionate being. I will miss his swagger, our hair jokes and his super cool shoes!

I loved Patrick. I will feel this void for the rest of my life; I am truly blessed to have known him.

As life would have it– I was moved today to search for this video to spend time reflecting on Patrick and our friendship. He is missed beyond what words can express. Thank you for this tribute and to the art guild for the lovely video. I am in the hills of Orinda, California and I am certain that the double rainbow in the sky last week was Patrick. I love you man.

It is an honor to have known such a great friend and mentor. He was an awesome man and artist and in my heart, he continues to be. He will forever bring me laughter. I learned a lot from Patrick about working with artist, recognizing their needs and working with art shows. He often talked about the shows and the people he met at them. Thank you Powderhorn for your love and support you are showing and thank all of the artist and collectors who have support and befriend Patrick.

Patrick was such an interesting character. We first met at the Stone Arch festival, many years ago. We always sought each other out at any art fair. He loved to talk. We both had similar approaches to our art and had a real connection, through Art (mutual admiration). We were already sad, after reading about the senseless death of Jean Matzke (artist) in downtown Saint Paul, now Patrick. Very sad news. Thanks to the staff at Powderhorn for letting us know.

I met Patrick yrs ago while doing art shows. He is one of my artist buddies. In 2007 when I did Powderhorn, I was surprised to learn from him that one of our artists buddies, Calvin Greer also from Milwaukee died of cancer. I did stay at his home when I did shows in that area. I talked to Patrick in length whenever we met at the show. Really missed him.

I am so sorry to have learned this news. I met Patrick two years ago in Appleton, what a lively personality! My husband hit it off with him just talking music. He gave me some good show advise and was very giving, his booth was always full. We met again in Green Bay and I got a big hug from him after receiving an award. He was a fantastic artist and will be missed.

We are very shocked and deeply saddened by his early departure from this natural world. We loved him as a human being and his creativity was widely recognized by many artists and jurors as well. This is a sad day for us but we take joy in knowing he was a child of God and is with the Lord at this moment. Thanks for remembering him at Powderhorn.
